Bodywork is an umbrella term for a variety of modalities used to ease and release a number of painful conditions rooted in the muscles, fascia, ligaments and tendons.
Performing any type of bodywork requires first and foremost a profound understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the human body. Secondly, the key is to listen. Listening, in this context, means to be attuned to each person’s unique body, and to meet and respect the tissue as it is. If a person has suffered trauma; physical, emotional or both, we have to give the body time to feel safe before working deep.

People seek massage & bodywork because they feel tight, and well-intended professionals dig into the tissue to the best of their ability to “release” all that pent up tension. What might be forgotten in this picture is that the “tightness” is often there for a reason, and removing it can potentially cause more pain. If a joint in the body is unstable or painful, the brain will order the surrounding muscles to protect the joint by contracting in order to reduce movement of the given joint. When this “muscle guarding” is released via manual manipulation, the joint becomes unstable and pain receptors are triggered.

Bodywork is a dance between the client and the practitioner, and it needs to be effortless and flowing. As professionals, it is not so much what we do, as in using different techniques, but how we do it that matters.

I have studied a number of modalities over the years, and I utilize many of them, often in combination. However, I do not adhere to one preferred technique as in my eyes that technique does not exist. I rely on my expertise, experience and on the relationship with any given client, because it is in the interpersonal space between the client and myself that healing happens.
