Movement equals life; as long as we are alive there is always something moving even when there is stillness. A stagnant body can lead to a stagnant mind, as well as poor circulation, brittle myofascia and weak muscles.
Our movements are controlled by a complex interaction of the properties of the myofascia, biomechanics of the body and neural mechanisms. The act of moving can take on numerous shapes and forms, and nobody has the authority to say what is the right or wrong type of movement for a given person.
My philosophy is that each individual has to move according to what they like to do, and what their body responds best to. When movement becomes a dreaded obligation it defeats the purpose. If walking is the activity that gives you pleasure and exercise, then walk, but aim for optimal gait for your body. The same goes for other movement forms, be it dancing, running, lifting weights, doing yard work and so forth. The key is to find the movement that you enjoy, and then listen to your body as to how much of the chosen movement is good for you. The concept of more is better is not necessarily so because our bodies can be worn down if we move too much or biomechanically incorrect. Therefore, balance is a key component in movement as in most things in life. Unless you are an athlete, you don’t need to exhaust yourself, moving in a comfortable way is enough to keep your body healthy.
In my clinic we use movement as an important modality to rehab injuries, correct biomechanical issues and correct painful walking patterns.
