This technique, coined by Eric Dalton, treats stubborn pain conditions and misalignment by mobilizing fixated joint capsules and ligaments that are causing problems. Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques (MAT) is a unique blend of myofascial release, osteopathic techniques, Golgi tendon work, articular stretching technique, and muscle energy techniques.
Bones and joints are held together by soft tissue, which includes myofascia (muscle and fascia), ligaments and tendons. If the myofascia supporting a joint is tight and short on one side and long and weak on the other, the joint is off balance. By releasing soft tissue restrictions along with strengthening weak muscles, bones are given the space to realign themselves naturally.

Neck and Shoulder pain
Depending on how you use the body, various myoskeletal imbalances can develop. An example would be a look of rounded shoulders, collapsed chest and flexed neck; stemming from hours of reading, or looking at a cell phone. Over time, the pain that emerges is felt in the upper back, neck and shoulders. The first step to treat this condition would be to help you become aware of your posture. We would then release and lengthen your short chest muscles so that the shoulders can move back into proper alignment. In order to keep the shoulders in this position, the next step is to strengthen the overstretched, and thus weak, upper back muscles, by doing specific exercises. In other words, the painful shoulder and neck muscles do not need to be “released” by deep tissue massage, as they are not short and tight, but overstretched. These muscles might benefit from some gentle manual work to quiet some of the pain receptors, but the key is to strengthen them so that they help maintain a proper, pain-free posture.
Hip Pain
Another example of myoskeletal imbalances can occur in the hips as a result of repetitive one-dimensional activities; walking, running, biking or driving. An unevenly toned myofascia of the hip area can create a pull on the hip bones, which might cause a rotation of the hips in the vertical and/or horizontal plane. As a result, you might one day, “out of the blue,” experience an intense pain in one or both sides of the hip and thighs. This type of pain can be effectively relieved by using MAT to gently align the hips, without use of any high velocity adjustment of bones. In order to keep the hips aligned, I assign specific exercises in all planes of motion that will strengthen the weak hip muscles and lengthen the short ones. The result is an aligned hip that allows pain-free movements.
